Black Women Connect! BookClub February Book Club Meeting – Queenie by Candice Carty-Williams

February 29 @ 7:00 pm

Are you a Black Woman in Toronto wanting to meet new people and create new networks?

Black Women Connect! Book Club is a Toronto-based book and social club that focuses on celebrating Black Literature, Sisterhood and the love of reading. Our mission is to bring Black Women together who love to read fiction and nonfiction books written by writers of African descent for meaningful conversations, connections and socialization. Each month we choose a book and use it as the foundation to discuss our own lives as black women – we, read, discuss, listen, reflect, renew, and yes, drink & eat! BWC purpose is to inform, empower, inspire, and enrich each member’s life through the privilege of reading and connecting with each other.

Black Women Connect is for Black Women in Toronto who are looking to make new friends and connect. In addition to our core book club, other activities include special members only brunches, thematic events, retreats, drinks and dinners and other social engagement.

February Book Club Meeting – Queenie by Candice Carty-Williams

Bridget Jones’s Diary meets Americanah in this disarmingly honest, boldly political, and truly inclusive novel that will speak to anyone who has gone looking for love and found something very different in its place.

Queenie Jenkins is a 25-year-old Jamaican British woman living in London, straddling two cultures and slotting neatly into neither. She works at a national newspaper, where she’s constantly forced to compare herself to her white middle class peers. After a messy break up from her long-term white boyfriend, Queenie seeks comfort in all the wrong places…including several hazardous men who do a good job of occupying brain space and a bad job of affirming self-worth.

As Queenie careens from one questionable decision to another, she finds herself wondering, “What are you doing? Why are you doing it? Who do you want to be?”—all of the questions today’s woman must face in a world trying to answer them for her.

With “fresh and honest” (Jojo Moyes) prose, Queenie is a remarkably relatable exploration of what it means to be a modern woman searching for meaning in today’s world.

All new members must RSVP and join our group on Facebook and bring a food or drink item to the book club meetings.
